Course Description

An Introduction to Policy, Systems, and Environmental Approaches is the first module of a more in-depth, six-module course entitled Making the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice. The course provides both an introduction for those new to PSE approaches and an overview for those with more experience with PSEs.


This course includes:

  • One self-paced module

  • Videos, practical tools, self-assessments

  • Resources relevant to the specific settings where you work

  • A downloadable set of Discussion Questions to facilitate group discussion about the course content

After completing this course, learners will have increased knowledge and skills to be able to:

  • Describe the socio-ecological model

  • Define and differentiate between policies, systems, and environments (PSEs)

  • Differentiate between PSEs and other complementary approaches

  • Explore successful PSEs

  • Recognize the importance of community context to PSE efforts

  • Identify skills needed to engage in PSE approaches

  • Define and differentiate between types of evidence

Target Audience

Nutrition education professionals, including those in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed), the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), and public health, working collaboratively to increase access to healthy food and physical activity options for low-income individuals and families. Paraprofessional educators, community members and those in the pre-professional programs studying topics such as dietetics or public health may also find this introductory course of value.
